This entire thing is heartbreaking and clearly Kelley is in a lot of emotional pain and she's not doing well. Where is her family and support system? Why wasn't anyone there with her when the kids came to see her? I am not giving Scott a total pass here. We are not seeing the whole story.
Apparently you are not reading the whole story. She has spiraled over the last week and has continually posted screenshots of text messaging with her SIL, Scott, her kids, and in each it has been clear that they are trying to be kind and caring while also setting the boundary that she needs to seek medical care. She has had the ability to see her kids for the past month but other than the visit she had the other day (that she streamed live) has not done so. I don’t believe she would behave this way when in her right mind - she also flip flops between castigating Scott and saying she loves him/he’s a great parent. Hopefully she will be inpatient for at least 6 weeks and can stabilize - her relationship w/kids is probably irreparably damaged, but if she doesn’t come out of it I can’t see any relationship in the future.
My mother had a similar incident many years ago, and let me tell you, as an ADULT it was almost irreparable. She announced she was leaving my dad, was going to shave her head and become a Buddhist monk, go live in a monastery and become a lesbian. I was about 34 when this happened and yeah, pretty much threw me for a loop!! There wasn't a ton of warning, it was like a light switch went off. This was right before she and my dad were about to go to Europe for the second time so my dad could teach in their study abroad program. Thank god it didn't happen when they were gone. It's like a zero-to-sixty type of thing (and yes, bipolar). So there might not have been a ton of warning here and the kids are probably reeling.
