MLS Next will soon require girls' clubs to transition from ECNL to GA, with discussions ongoing for the next 1-2 years. This could signal the end for ECNL, as the top clubs in the nation are already part of MLS Next for boys. For ECNL clubs with strong boys' and girls' teams, it makes strategic sense to pursue joining MLS Next and GA as soon as possible, before it's too late. Remember, MLS is aiming to dominate the youth market, and they have more resources than any other organization in the country.
I support this move, and have already made the move with my wallet a year ago knowing this was imminent. However its shortsighted to say ECNL's days are numbered. Competition is part of the american marketplace. ECNL will sit on their college soccer is the pinnacle of soccer in this country, and do just fine financially. College education is far to valued for an org like ECNL to lose its market footprint overnight. Will better soccer with a professional pathway be happening on the otherside, yes of course, but american consumers have already demonstrated that they value the IG post about the college more
disagree it may take a few years but ECNL will become irrelevant like CCL.
The ECNL conference consists mainly of CCL clubs, along with a few NC clubs, so it’s essentially the same. It is the weakest ECNL conference in the country for a reason.
Lol. It’s not the weakest on the girls side. Not even close.
Is that why all ECNL clubs are being pressured to merge in this conference? - VDA (merger) - Union (merger) - NVA (merger) - Richmond U (merger) I don’t see ECNL pushing clubs like Bethesda, Pipeline, or Delco to merge.
Union was the only forced merger and it was for the boys. FC Delco used to be Continental FC (merger of several clubs) then rebranded as FC Delco. NVA was not forced by ECNL. Clubs chose to do it. Richmond United and VDA have been around for about 10 years since the development Academy days. ECNL had nothing to do with it. Who would Bethesda merge with? They basically merged with Maryland Rush when KL came to BSC. You’re new here. It shows.
