The UVA college kid, Otto, who was detained for taking down a poster in North Korea and was released a vegetable a few years later. Did he really take down a poster or was it faked by the North Korean government? I don't think we will ever know.
I’ve been to DPRK. I’m sure he took it down. If he was drunk in the “island” hotel for visitors he could have easily done something stupid, and they took it seriously and made an example of him. Also, the tour guides there aren’t your friends. They would report him or they’d get in trouble, if they’d seen it. Our group quietly questioned things in whispers away from people, but he was a kid and stupid, and probably drunk because there’s nothing to do there at night but drink in the hotel and do karaoke. You have zero freedom if you visit.
North Koreans live up to their barbaric reputation. Killing someone's child while he's a guest in their country, over a poster.
You act like some five year old tore down a poster because he was having a melt down. Someone smart enough to get into UVA and with parents who could afford to pay for a trip to North Korea should not have done something so stupid. I went to an international school in Indonesia and some stupid American kid decided to vape pot in an outdoor cafe. He was sentenced to four years in prison and came out half human. He is still living with his parents and will never be capable of independent living.
Are you actually stating that tearing down a poster was worthy of brutalizing a guest in your nation? Please clarify what you stated, but I hope I got you wrong.
NP. Come on. That’s very obviously a mischaracterization of the PP’s post. She’s saying that he probably did take it down while drunk, because there’s nothing else to do in the evenings. He clearly did not deserve the punishment he eventually got, but the NK government chose to make an example out of him. I agree he probably did “do the crime” because I don’t think NK would just randomly choose an American tourist to scapegoat if there were absolutely zero grounds. There’s always a minor crime/violation underlying these trumped-up political arrests (see Brittany Griner’s case too). That does NOT mean he deserved to be tortured.
