First, Barbara Lee is 77. No, Newsome is not appointing someone that old. Further, the Af-Am constituency in California has been dropping fast - now down to only 7% of the state's population.

If anything, I could see him appointing like Rep. Robert Garcia. The CA Democratic party is in dire need of new blood.

1. Newsom has already said he wants to appoint a black woman

2. Newsom needs to make massive inroads with the black community if he has any shot at the White House

3. Newsom doesn’t want to appoint someone too young that could lock up the senate seat for decades.

4. Newsom is a Bay Area dem - he’s rather not see a socal person get the seat
