The crime tracking Twitter accounts are a tough call for me. I personally had to unfollow them because I do think when you follow them you get the impression that crime is really bad all the time, because it's all the tweet, and also they will tweet like 12 times for the same event, tweet in all caps, and tweet crimes happening all over the region (not just in Ward 6). I recognized that being exposed to that all the time was bad for my mental health and not actually helping to keep me safe, so I unfollowed. However, I am grateful for those accounts because when something happens (like when I hear a bunch of gunshots outside my home, or see crime scene tape blocking off a block, etc.) I will go look at those accounts and often they have the relevant details I need. That's a public service and it's not one being performed by anyone in DC government -- before those accounts were around, it was often hard to get information on these events even when you were looking. If you were lucky, a local TV reporter or account would pick it up. But otherwise you'd be in dark a lot. So I think there are some negatives to these accounts and would recommend against following them closely because it's just too much. BUT the people complaining that the concern about crime is entirely the fault of these Twitter accounts are crazy. Those accounts couldn't report on these crimes if they weren't happening. They certainly aren't causing it. Getting mad at RTN or Alan Henney or any of these guys is really misguided.
