I'll admit, some of the posts are silly and humorous, but I wouldn't call the debate silly. Where to put the school is a perfectly legitimate debate as it directly affects the neighborhood. And think about this: some folks are not in ANY cluster, have no children and will be adversely affected anyway. I am so tired of the Montgomery County BS mantra' It's for the Children. No one wants a large over sized middle school in their midst. School are all being built over sized these days, just like houses and cars. It's disgusting, and I wouldn't want a large unsightly building in my neighborhood either.
So the argument goes, some people don't have kids, so they think there should be no school in their neighborhood? I would say this is silly. I, and many other young families, would be happy to buy those empty nesters' houses off of them to live near a brand-new school.
No, the argument goes; if you are going to take away a neighborhood public amenity, then it is not a school related issue, it is a development issue that affects all people, not JUST people with children, and so ALL people should have a say in how their neighborhood gets developed. Now, if you are going to redevelop school owned property (which many would say RCH is) then there is no quibble, but when you are taking from the larger community for the needs of a few (sorry but that is true) then the larger community should have more say. As for my community (and I do have young school aged children but I am not self centered enough to think we are the few who matter most) we already have several schools, and I can tell you, they are a pain in the neck when it comes to traffic.
