IMO, after this incident, it's clear that we need SROs. Having one may not have stopped this particular incident, but it's clear that admin and staff are not trained (nor should they really be) to assess this type of situation and respond to it appropriately. Whatever Restorative Justice MCPS has tried, it's not working. SROs are not the only answer, but it's one tool in the shed we can utilize to protect our children, AND to make connections with kids who clearly need better guidance and direction. It's time MCPS brought back the SROs, even temporarily for a year or two, since we all know that last year's VL created a lot of mental health issues in kids. The fallout is going to take a while to recover.
The basic issue is that if they are intent on keeping SROs out of school then they need to be vigorous about identifying and removing violent and disruptive kids from schools. If they will not do that then SROs are needed, period.
This. And you know they won't. I hope the fact that the victim's family has retained a lawyer is a sign that they will sue MCPS or Mont. County for their negligence. They knew the value of SROs and what they bring to the table. They're on video saying it. They knew all HS Principals begged for them to stay. They KNEW that violence was up and that mental health was going to be an issue after year long virtual school and pandemic. But yet, they decided to remove the SROs without adequately putting other resources in place to provide the same level of safety if not more than what the SROs had provided. To me, they intentionally put students and staff in more danger. They are horrible.
