From years of observation, don't knock your self out with trying to get on an ECNL 1 team while your DD is in middle school. Get on a team and continue to get play time and develop while saving money. College coaches are not looking at players at that age, so it's just a parent ego thing. Then in 9th grade, try to make the move, as by then most of those earlier ECNL players have gotten complacent and skills start to diminish and can no longer depend on size and speed as those aspects all balance out eventually. Technical skill and soccer IQ wins the day. Seen this happen time and time again at Bethesda hence they struggle to compete at the older age groups.
There’s a counter argument of what you said. Some has indicated that if a player is not able to join the top team by U13, it’s much tougher to join later. The second argument is that if a player is not on the top team practicing with other top players and playing against top competition, the player will not properly develop and won’t be able to handle the faster speed of play and IQ. MY DD is not in ECNL, so I can’t speak if the counter arguments are true. Love for others to shed light.
The counter argument is somewhat correct, in that it's a bit harder to join at a later time. But this is not due to players who were not on the ECNL roster before not having the talent, but history has shown it's more of the club leaders not wanting to admit to their earlier choice of some players skills may have diminished and it's time to make a change. One can easily see players who were at the top of their game at U12/U13, not there at U15 because there is no longer a competitive advantage with size and speed as in earlier years. I suspect this may change with KL on board though, as he is a new set of eyeballs. If not on an ECNL 1 roster early on, just keep working on technical skill, and the payoff will be there. The speed of play at ECNL 1 is faster, but it's something players will adapt to quickly.
