Because it's virtually impossible to build said barrier directly ON the border.  They cross into US territory before they even reach the barrier.  Sorry but that is how it works.[/quote]

Clearly none of you have actually thought through the actual logistics of building and maintaining a wall.  Israel's barriers aren't *on* the border, either.  They are set back from the border, to allow maintenance, et cetera.  Otherwise they would have to ask Egypt and other neighbors to allow them to enter in order to maintain their barriers, and that would be an extremely poor plan.  And as a result, you can cross the border and go a few feet into Israel and stand on Israeli land but be outside their barrier.

But what's important to remember is that while illegal immigrants / refugees / whatever may still be directly outside the fence, they have in fact made it to the US and are standing on US soil and that impacts asylum requests, et cetera.[/quote]
