Exactly. My NYC-area family members have heard of Poolesville, TJ, and Sidwell, in terms of DC-area high schools. When I said we were moving to the DC area, they said "Oh, they have Poolesville and TJ, right? Those are like the Stuy and Bronx Science of the DC area."

Anyone who goes/went to Stuy and Bronx Science knows about Blair. I have family members who when they come down here ask me where Blair HS is.

OK, fine, quizbowl and science contest ppl would know these schools and all the private ones. just like the debate team HS nerds know what programs are good in HS too.

The ONLY way these schools are going to be known is if their alumni are out there in prominent companies or schools or programs doing good work and leading important projects. you can stay in the region or in a safe track, but then don't expect to garner a national reputation for your school.
