I can't express enough how much of a difference there is between a typical Jewish/Asian/UMC White household an a typical AA/Latino/Poor White household when it comes to the expectations that they put on their children for education.[/quote]

My dad grew up in the 40s in a 3-room apartment, and when the "boychik" was studying (which was hours every evening), his parents (my grandparents) didn't even play the radio in the next room because it might disturb his concentration! He said dinner was lively, but when study time came, they whispered and tiptoed around. The priority was that dad would get good grades and admitted to a good college. [/quote]
