The B2007 selection was a joke. Mostly Braves players received offers—those same Braves players who were initially not offered spots on VAUnion. The most absurd part? The Braves coach maintained an ongoing group chat with his players, asking them whom he should recruit for his new team. I never want to hear that they are making decisions based on "the best interest of the players", they don't care about them.
I'm sorry your son didn't receive an offer, but that isn't surprising when you consider there were probably about 100 kids with ECNL-N and MLSNext experience at tryouts. This was the hardest age group since it consisted of both 2007 and 2006 boys. I don't blame a coach for asking his players for opinions on players he should watch at a tryout. There were a lot of kids to scout. All of these kids have either played together or against one another for years. They know each other and know who has technical and tactical skills. Asking some players, who are now 17/18 and have been playing soccer for over 10 years, for their opinions on players seems like a good decision to me. These are young men who we demand perform a sport at one of the highest levels. They want to win and they want the best players available to help them win. So, a coach asking some of his better players who is good and who he should recruit, I think is making a decision. And just to put the current B2007 teams into perspective for you, VAUnion just barely beat BRAVE 2 years ago. This was the very first game for the 2007 BRAVE team and this BRAVE team lost every game in conference that year and had a goal differential of more than -100. This year the B2007 BRAVE team beat VAUnion. So don't act like the team VAUnion team was a top of the table club. I know for a fact that there are about 5 Union boys that received offers, a boy from NVA, a boy from a MLSNext team, plus some boys I'm not sure where they played last year. Will this age group consist of more BRAVE players? Yes, it will consist of a little over half, but it's not the whole current team that received offers. Will next years FVU 2007/06B team be better? Yes, it will. And I think it will be significantly better than either the current BRAVE or VAUnion teams. Next year's team will be deep and every player will be pushing each other for playing time. The talent difference between the starters and bench players will be razor thin. All of this is what you want in the upper age groups for academy teams.
PS. This is posted by a parent who is tired of the VAUnion whining and complaining.
Tell us, how do YOU have detailed information on the offers/make up of the team? Are you a coach or administrator? Or are you a parent or player?
I don’t have a dog in this fight, but a coach asking 17 year olds for opinions on players in a group chat is moronic. I can’t imagine a competent coach doing that, so hopefully that isn’t true. BRAVE and Union 07s look to both have had losing records. It’s a jump to go from u17 to u19, with a decent number of left over 06s now in the mix. If 100ish players showed up for tryouts, at most half of the roster would likely be coming from BRAVE and Union 07 COMBINED. Frankly, I’d be shocked if FVU Boys isn’t the weakest boys ECNL side in NOVA.
