This is a dog and pony show. The Northern Westfield elementary schools have to go or they will be cutoff from Westfield. It really comes down to if they pull South Lakes elementary schools or Chantilly elementary schools to go along with the Westfield ones. The next issue is then back filling Westfield.
Thought moving part of Westfield and Chantilly into Skyview was pretty much guaranteed and the bigger questions were whether they’d move part of South Lakes or Oakton into Skyview as well and then move parts of Chantilly and/or Centreville to back fill Westfield. It’s seemed like most of the back and forth over the past several months has been whether Fox Mill or Crossfield made more sense to move into Skyview.
Problem: Meren won't let Fox Mill move. RIO seems to have some clout. But, Crossfield should move.
Meren doesn’t have veto power and she could agree to cede Fox Mill to Skyview if South Lakes gets the rest of Crossfield and maybe the Navy island in return. That would be a bit like the deal years ago to send Fox Mill from Oakton to South Lakes, in return for which Oakton picked up part of Chantilly.
That would result the largest pupil placement movement in FCPS history.
The best part would be if they only allowed pupil placement to Skyview for AP.
That could be a possibility but I know Skyview is not available this year and kids wanting to pupil place out of SLHS are being sent to Herndon. The Language option for AP/Russian and AP/Japanese are no longer available. People who want to transfer from Herndon are only being given SLHS for IB. We had a friend who was pupil placing from Herndon who confirmed that the only option they had was SLHS for IB, there was not a language option which is what Herndon kids used to go to Langley for Russian.
I'm glad they are eliminating these loopholes. I still think kids who have done language immersion for years should be allowed to pupil place for language, but no one else.
So it's fine with you that some schools offer far more extensive language offerings than others, and kids at some schools will now have no way to access those courses. Got it.
I think every school in FCPS offers Spanish and French then schools can offer two other languages. I think most schools offer 4 foreign languages, but I could be wrong about that. Those two additional languages differ from school to school. The language immersion languages, beyond Spanish and French, are German, Korean, and Japanese. I know some schools offer Russian and Mandarin. There are a variety of languages at HS. I know Japanese is offered at SLHS, Westfield, and Oakton. I believe Langley offers Japanese. Skyview will have it as well. Fox Mill and Great Falls offer the JI program, they feed into SLHS and Langley. Out of boundary kids for FMES JI program tend to attend SLHS, Westfield, and Oakton so Japanese makes sense at the HS that have it. Skyview is offering it because there are a god number of JI kids from FMES program opting in to Skyview.
