My 12 yo learned last year that people will pay to have their driveways done. Between Monday and a Tuesday he and a friend made over $150 each and still got some sledding in. My older child chose to sled with friends 4-5 hours a day everyday this week and I was fine with that too. As long as they aren’t sitting around 12 hours a day I’m happy. They both dog sit, babysit etc. I find if we don’t give them money for everything all the time they naturally decide to find ways to earn it.
This is the key. I wouldn't want to shovel either if my parents gave me money for what I wanted. The wealthiest people I know still make their kids work in the summers when they are teens and in college. They don't give allowances.
What do you think we give our kids that’s so excessive? Mine works summers and we put that money away. I don’t allow them to take money from our older and disabled neighbors as irs the right thing to do and one day it will be me. My kids aren’t wearing designer clothing or shoes, going out to eat constantly, shopping, etc. they are too busy with school and activities. They do have one hobby we will buy gear for. So, yes, the few times a month they eat our with friend or their team we will pay. Why wouldn’t we? Those kids you know are out all the time, want hair, nails, designer clothing, some of our kids are not.
That seems excessive to me but I just grew up a different way I guess. I don’t have the money to pay for my kid’s sport and then give them money on top of it (gear, tournaments, etc) to then go out multiple times each month with friends. You may think that’s normal because of where you live and the who your kids are friends with. The rest of us don’t have the money for that. If my kid wants money to do stuff with his friends, he pays with it from the money he earns from his job. That’s what it’s for.
