Related question- why are block schedules still happening? At a time they may have worked but wasn’t their big draw that had time IN class to be taught and to do work so no homework. Now that required homework actually outside of class, what is benefit of a block schedule? Is it just so when people travel if miss 2 days is as if only missed 1 day of each class?
Agree. I've never liked this. I understand that it gives time for more in-depth time in class and allows for practice, but I am not sure it is the best model. It does allow for less time switching classes, etc. When I was in school, we had fifty minute classes of instruction. Science/labs may have been different, but honestly I don't remember. I know we also had study hall--maybe, it was just the other half of lunch hour and I did homework then. I wish my memory was better on this! But, I do remember homework and reading at home--a lot. I also remember a term paper in history--complete with footnotes, etc. I don't remember doing homework in class. I think there are advantages to the block scheduling, but I really think the other model is better.
