One thing that probably would have helped a lot would have been to make the DCC a region and let it keep its programs. Just be straight with folks that they are limiting the capacity of the programs and reducing transportation. Of course people would be upset about that but that would be less disruptive and have fewer equity concerns. People would be able to know they can access established programs instead of taking stuff away and starting things from scratch.
Limiting slots with the regional model and reducing transportation means less equity. It also means these aren't going to be accessible.
I agree that the transportation proposal is terrible. Just saying they could literally make a lot of people much less unhappy (not happy, just less unhappy) by keeping everything about their proposal the same but making the DCC its own region instead of splitting it up.
The only way it would work is a lottery to all the schools within the region and provide transportation. But, along with that, they need to provide funding for the specialized programs. Putting "magnets" in schools without the teachers/classes already isn't going to work without more funding, as schools are going to see a decrease in funding when the boundaries change and student numbers are reduced. It doesn't matter who has the arts, theater, or STEM, as what your school has is what you get and if you are lucky, you can get one of what 20 or so spots per school. If these schools aren't given more arts teachers, they cannot expand their offerings or provide magnet offerings, so what is the end game with all this?
