[twitter]

I didn't even know this club existed (or was being formed) until this week. Looking at the clips on Instagram, I think I see a few familiar faces. I believe they intend to post coaches on their website soon (I've gotten a few text messages from the TD whom we met two or so years ago). One of the Insta posts suggested that there will be a "Meet The Coaches" Zoom call in mid-October. Fielding four teams (per Insta) Fees will be in the $5500 range (including AAU/USAV Nationals) Practices start Nov. 6th Open division play (intend to meet the requirements for CRHVA Bid Regionals) First tournament in December Cap Hill Three qualifiers (Big South, NEQ, Music City)
Good Lord 5K out the gate for a brand new club is outrageous
Just wait until they figure that they cannot attract reasonably good players to do the laundry at the three qualifiers.
100%. I wish I had half the confidence of some of these coaches who decide to start their own clubs. Coming out of the gate with teams at 4 age groups and a full schedule of 3 qualifiers and other competitive tournaments is bold. At least they have coaches listed for most age groups. Sometimes new clubs launch without having enough coaches identified or practice space arranged and then have to scale back after families have already paid which is less than good. Seems like some of their coaches are coming from the St. James and at least one of the coaches listed used to coach for Cap City Elite which doesn't appear to be around anymore. I'd like to believe they have the best intentions, but it sure feels like it would be more prudent to start off a little less ambitious and get some teams established for a season or two before traveling all over the country to qualifiers.
It looks like they are all decently successful coaches. There are always so many girls at tryouts for any given team, it makes sense to add clubs. It also looks like they have plenty of experience running teams. Does anyone know if they were mostly all coaches at the St James last year? And did something happen at the st James to make them break off? I see St James in the info. Just not sure if it was recent or not.
Looking at the rosters (which includes the coaches) of the St James teams that played in the 2024 CHC (https://events.sportwrench.com/#/events/cf57945b1/clubs/33282) it doesn't seem like most of these coaches were at the St. James last year. I agree these seem to be experienced coaches which is a good thing. Nevertheless, I think that attracting experienced players needed to compete at national qualifiers (particularly if they are going to play in the open division) will be a challenge for a new club. Yes there are lots of girls at tryouts, but the ones that don't have offers from more established clubs are going to be those with less experience. None of this is meant to say that people shouldn't be starting new clubs. There is absolutely a need for more clubs as volleyball continues to grow in the DMV. I just feel like taking a more measured approach in the first season or two would be better. Setting club fees at the level of more established clubs with a demonstrated track record and committing to 3 qualifiers in season 1 seems to set them up for some disappointment.
Beware, their club director isn't even living in VA. Her family moved to Texas over the summer.
