Week of May 1 -2023 VA Boys Class 6 Rankings 1. Yorktown (11-1) Last Week: Def. Langley 13-5, Def. McLean 10-6 Analysis: Yorktown continued its dominant run, knocking off Liberty district challengers Langley and McLean without much difficulty. The Patriots should end the regular season without a loss to a public school and as the clear #1 heading to the district tournaments. This Week: Chantilly (5/2), Marshall (5/4) 2. Madison (11-2) Last Week: Def. Oakton 13-4, Def. South Lakes 11-3, Def. Battlefield 9-4 Analysis: Madison had a strong week, crushing Oakton and South Lakes and cruising to a win against Battlefield. The defense locked Battlefield down and the offense had long possession, with solid Battlefield goalie play keeping the score closer than it seemed. The head to head wins against Robinson and Lake Braddock keep them in second place, while the big loss to Yorktown keeps them from challenging for the top spot. This Week: Westfield (5/5) 3. Robinson (10-3) Last Week: Def. Fairfax 17-4, Def. Dominion 13-3, Def. Lake Braddock 15-14, Def. Chantilly 17-4 Analysis: Huge four-win week propels Robinson to the #3 spot, highlighted by a win over Lake Braddock that was one of the better games this season. As others have noted, they lack the true star power but are well-coached and play great team ball that could serve them well in the post-season. Tricky to rank #3-5 as Robinson beat Lake Braddock, Lake Braddock beat Battlefield, and Battlefield beat Robinson, but at this point in the season we see the Rams as the most complete team of these three and they get the very slight nod here this week. This Week: West Springfield (5/2) 4. Lake Braddock (11-2) Last Week: Def. Woodson 17-6, Lost to Robinson 15-14 Analysis: Lake Braddock lost a close one to archrival Robinson and once again let the Rams claim the regular season crown. The Bruins will be looking to get their revenge in the post-season like they did in ending Robinson’s season last year after losing the regular season matchup. The Bruins finish with a testy South County team that they should beat but should not overlook. This Week: South County (5/2) 5. Battlefield (9-3) Last Week: Def. Gainesville 15-1, Def. John Champe 9-5, Lost to Madison 9-4 Analysis: Easy win over Gainesville and decent win over Champe, who looks to be fairly decent, but Battlefield didn’t really show up against Madison. The Warhawks controlled the game and the score could have been worse without the Bobcats’ goalie showing up big time. Battlefield has a signature win over Robinson that keeps them above McLean. We thought the game with Patriot this week would be more important, but the Pioneers seem to be fading and we expect Battlefield to win that one handily. This Week: Osbourn (5/1), Patriot (5/4) 6. McLean (11-2) Last Week: Lost to Yorktown 10-6 Analysis: McLean managed to stay shard during their layoff and played a respectable game against a very strong Yorktown team. Defense did a nice job limiting 10 goals, a feat few teams have been able to accomplish this season. With just W-L left, the Highlanders should finish the season 12-2 and the clear #2 seed in Liberty. Great season for them but with no top-5 wins they stay below Battlefield. This Week: Washington-Liberty (5/4) 7. Langley (6-3) Last Week: Lost to Yorktown 13-5 Analysis: The Saxons never really showed up against Yorktown and looked overmatched at both ends of the field. They don’t look like a true contender at this point but they beat Oakton head-to-head and there aren’t any better teams below them to push them out of this spot. This Week: Herndon (5/2), Wakefield (5/4) 8. Oakton (7-5) Last Week: Lost to Madison 13-4, Def. Centreville 11-5, Def. Colgan 15-1 Analysis: Basically the same write up as for Langley. Oakton didn’t show up against Madison, doesn’t look like a true contender, but has beaten most of the teams ranked lower and there is no one to push them out of this spot. This Week: Wakefield (5/2), Chantilly (5/5) 9. Freedom South Riding (9-3) Last Week: Def. Unity Reed 20-1 Analysis: Freedom destroyed lowly Unity Reed, but that was expected. Easy match with Gainesville but the Thursday game with John Champe could be very interesting, as the Knights played Battlefield much better than did the Eagles. We wouldn’t be shocked to see Champe knock off Freedom and take the #2 spot in Region B. This Week: Gainesville (5/1), John Champe (5/4) 10. West Potomac (8-5) Last Week: Def. Alexandria City 12-5, Def. Fairfax 17-6, Def. West Springfield 13-10, Def. Westfield 7-4 Analysis: Four wins in a week vaults West Potomac into the top ten for the first time this season. We know West Potomac lost to South County head-to-head, but the Wolverines’ remaining losses were to quality teams (Lake Braddock, Madison, Robinson, Oakton), while some of South County’s losses were too disappointing (Centreville, West Springfield, Hayfield). This Week: Woodson (5/2) Honorable Mention: John Champe, Cosby, Kellam, Patriot, South County
