The most typical hunting round in the US on game is a .308 which is a bullet that is 2x bigger than used by the AR-15. AR-15s and the 556/223 ammunition was developed/adapted after WWII because military doctrine shifted from high lethality at range to high volume suppression so that the enemy could be pinned down by volume of fire and be destroyed by other units trough flanking or artillery/bombs.
