Every ad featuring a black/white couple seems forced and over the top.
+1 And I’m in a bi-racial marriage! It feels like it’s pandering and not authentic.
-1. I am bi-racial and will never forget how awesome it was to see the Cheerios commercial with a a mixed family. That lasted about 24 hours until the rage of the public that slandered freakin Cheerios. I don’t understand how something like that can be forced but seeing two black actors or two white actors doesn’t seem forced. I guess it’s true, people really do see color (even if they’re in a bi-racial marriage).
But when almost every ad features a black/white couple, it does seem forced. This represents only a small percentage of marriages in this country. Commercials featuring white/Asian marriages would be more representative.
I very rarely see mixed race black/white couples on commercials. What I do see are a lot of ethnically ambiguous families that could be Latino or Italian, or Latino or light skinned black, or Latino or south Asian., etc., with a voice over narration. I started noticing it after I started watching Spanish language TV and realized that a lot of the commercials are deliberately casting actors that will pass for Latino so they can use the same shots but the. Just change the voiceover for the Latino market. Once I noticed it, I see it so often! Notice how infrequently the actual commercial actors speak—it’s often the happy family eating cereal while the voiceover tells you how happy they are to eat such nutritious food.
