Does anyone know how big the lottery pools are for Takoma Park and Eastern? Our kid is in both pools, but was selected for neither. Just wondering how many kids are also still in the lottery pool/wait list.
A friend of mine called AEI and they said they are not releasing this information at this time. I’m not sure why not.
Perhaps lottery results will show that MCPS agenda? equity over excellence
MCPS's agenda should be both non-discrimination and excellence. Let's see the forest for the trees. Systematic discrimination harms very talented kids.
I'm so glad they've addressed this with the lottery. It was so wrong that they were admitted only wealthy kids before who could afford prep classes.
You mean they denied opportunities for kids who perform high and deserve to be in magnet?
"Perform high" based on which measure? There are so many factors at play.
Pre-lottery/post-universal screening they considered grades, MAP and CoGAT (with a MCPS % that was adjusted for three FARMS bands). And added home-school cohort on top of that as a factor. They got rid of self-selection and teacher recs. What else do people want? People go on and on about how the criteria was biased, gamed, susceptible to prepping, etc., but what I really hear is, hey, it’s not perfect (aka my kid didn’t get selected), so let’s make selection random or get rid of the magnets.
People seem to be under the mistaken impression that "meritocracy" is fair.
Lets out actual examples to this discussion. There are kids in recent years with straight As, 98-99% MAP, and 98-99% CogAT who were not selected. For those kids, what other measures are important? What are they missing?
