My question is in what U.S. State is it acceptable to choose children's admissions into Magnet programs by rolling dice? Why isn't the news picking up on this issue? These people are completely incompetent as educators and at best this is classic Waste Fraud and Abuse.
Um, Fairfax County, Virginia? New York City San Francisco Boston Public I’m sure there are others - those are just the ones I see in the news regularly. Some states don’t require any gifted services at all, and many districts don’t offer them. Lots of the elite gifted programs nationwide are looking at ways to diversify their student bodies.
Dragging everyone down to create equity is a national phenomenon. Leads to easier, quicker wins for politicians who don't want to do the hard yards which pulling people up entails. So if some kids are doing poorly or not choosing to take algebra for class 8 for example - leading to "non equity" class composition , the logical, hard yards solution would be to try and focus on preparing kids better in earlier classes so that they are ready for algebra. Invest in teachers, parent awareness, early childhood education. Easier solution is just to eliminate algebra. If there's no algebra there's 100% equity. The latter is what's happening.
