To those talking about book banning and censorship. Reminder: this is a school library. It is not banning a book publisher or sales. It is not banning the books from the public library. But, it is supported by a school system whose tax dollars are supposed to be spent in the education of our children. Is this the best use of those tax dollars? If librarians think they need to spend money on books such as these, maybe they have too much money to spend.
Agree. It’s ridiculous that books like that graphic novel are in school libraries.
+1 completely agree.
Putting aside these books, I don’t agree. Both my 5 on the AP Lang exam, now in AP Lit kid and my TJ, 5 on AP Lit kid went through a phase where they were fans of a graphic novelist. It was very age appropriate stuff DH read with them. But, my kids aren’t the target group for these. I have also volunteered as a reading buddy in their schools. And some kids are weak readers. And by middle school, they are staring at a wall of text. If they have learning disabilities or are just weak readers, it’s overwhelming. The graphic novels are easier to tackle and keep them reading. Which is the important part. Not what they are doing in English class, but that there are books they find accessible in libraries. Because they aren’t going to tackle Harry Potter. But, they will tackle something where the text is less intimidating and there are context clues. Also good for ESOL. And again, not saying these two books are or are not appropriate. But in general, they target an audience that really needs to be encouraged to read. Many are very appropriate and well done. And are certainly better than video games for free time.
PP wrote "books like that graphic novel" not "graphic novels." I take your larger point and you aren't actually disagreeing.
