The flights out of national need to be substantially reduced. There is excess capacity for more flights from Dulles and BWI. There is absolutely no logical reason to have a nonstop flight out of national to freakin Wichita.
Dulles has 4 parallel runways and no restricted airspace nearby. National has basically only 1.5 runways and there’s one narrow path in/out. How do you compare the two? It’s much more difficult to control for air traffic at DCA. As has been discussed extensively, the number of flights at DCA isn't the problem. The proximity of helicopter routes to DCA is the problem.
Both can be (and are) a problem.
The separation between landing flights is the same as what you'd find at other busy airports, including IAD and BWI. The flights aren't the problem. The helicopters are.
This is not correct. IAD was designed to accommodate 70 million annual passengers. DCA was designed to handle 15 million. Last year, both airports had around 25 million passengers. DCA actually handled MORE flights than IAD last year I believe (because the planes tend to be smaller for DCA).
And yet, you'll still see aircraft spaced 4-6 miles apart coming into Dulles.
