But hey, you got yours, right?
DP. I’m in favor of them expanding where the actual needs are (eg, McLean), not them expanding based on faulty projections or for equity needs (not saying that’s centreville or not, I honestly don’t know). I think what you’re trying to do is pretty slimy. If you aren’t for your kids to be moved, you shouldn’t be salivating to have others kids moved. There are several hypocrites in this board that are fine sticking it to their neighbors by advocating for changes in other schools. But they’ll join the opponents in pushing back against changes for their own dear Susie. That’s why I think it is perfectly reasonable to demand that the school board members’ kids get moved as part of this process. Every time.
There it is, folks. I am not advocating for boundary adjustments. I am pushing back on folks on this board punching down on overcrowded areas in Western Fairfax because they believe it supports their argument against boundary changes to a very specific area. That is slimy. That is selfish. There is no western high school. The Centreville expansion is necessary. We all see what you are doing. Stop sacrificing the rest of the county on the alter of your weak arguments.
Enrollments are projected to decline over the next 10 years or so. I believe last year was the largest Senior class and every year from now on the numbers diminish. Expansions are not needed because by the size of the student population will be below the current school size by the time the expansion is completed. Essentially, the expansions were needed 5 years ago but not now. So yeah, cancel the expansions and save that money. Renovate schools but don't expand them. The reality is the boundary adjustments were needed 10 years ago to deal with the current overcrowding. The expansions were needed 10 years ago to prevent the overcrowding but the mega schools really are not great for students so boundary adjustments would have been better. Both were kicked down the road because people didn't want to spend the money or shift boundaries for a wide variety of reasons. Now that we are at the start of the declining student population numbers, we are doing both. The answer is to focus on the boundaries of the over crowded schools and make the shifts needed to take care of those schools. There will be secondary and tertiary effects as kids are moved to reduce the overcrowding but there are good reasons for those moves, as much as the affected parties won't like it.
