It would be interesting to see before and after statistics of the crime, school ratings and property values
The biggest concern is that these are short term which they said they should be coming in and out every 2-3 months, which means 40 families in and out of the neighborhood and in and out of the schools every 2-3 months? It sounds chaotic and for families that already live there and bought homes to be in a community of single family homes, having 40 families moving in and out every 2 months seems disruptive for the community and for the homeless families themselves.
Shelters are meant to be temporary. The goal is to house people permanently in a stable living situation, and the shelter is only meant to provide case managers time to help assess families and help them transition to something more permanent. RE: schools - the law allows parents to choose the school placement: the school of origin or the neighborhood school. If the kid is thriving in one school, then the parents can opt to keep him there (and transportation must be provided).
Right but you must admit having 40 families moving in and out of a small neighborhood every 2-3 months will have an impact on the community?
Nope. It won't result in 40 families moving in and out a month. Honestly, it's rather ambitious that they anticipate a two month turnover rate. Unless they have a secret stash of vouchers or RRH subsidies, I'm not sure how they will be able to move people that fast. You do realize that people move in and out of that neighborhood regularly, right? Rentals turn over, people divorce, people die. These families will move into the new shelter with the clothes on their backs and a suitcase or two. When they move in and out, you won't notice. I'm sure your biggest concern is the impact on school. You need not worry. Most parents will opt to keep their kids in their current school. And those who do opt to enroll in your yuppie school just might opt to stay in that school once they are permanently housed elsewhere. So what's the issue?
40 + more kids to Wilson feeder pattern, which is already overcrowded. How does DCPS plan to deal (no pun intended) with that?
Can you read?!?! 1. Not all families have school aged kids. Many will just have one baby, or one baby plus a toddler/preschooler. 2. Not all families will opt to yank their kids out of their current school and enroll them in your precious school. 3. You won't have to deal with tons of new kids at your school...unless I opt to buy or rent in your neighborhood and send my brood to your precious school...and you'd have no day in that decision either. 4. You are worrying about nothing, so why are you getting so worked up? You might want to check yourself...you sound like an anti-poor racist...and I'm sure you don't want to be that person, right? Tip: the best way to educate yourself and develop some empathy is to volunteer at a family shelter. Now, it isn't a zoo, so they won't let you waltz in and observe the native species. But there are ways to get involved to support their efforts.
I would certainly hope they would enroll their kids at the neighborhood school and go and get a decent paying at the chipotle, whole foods, Safeway etc next door. Is the point to move to independence or no???????
