Bottom line - Matty does not want to be Mr. Taylor Swift.
He doesn't. However, he brought her up continuously in interviews/podcasts over the 10 years leading up to TTPD. He definitely has an obsession with her too.
Agreed it's not one-sided but it's like they both don't actually want each other, they want a version of each other that doesn't exist. She wants a version of him that is 100% politically correct and at all times behaves in alignment with her billion-dollar brand (while simultaneously being wild and exciting?) and he wants a version of her that would prioritize her connection with the real him over her billion-dollar brand.
Multiple songs on TTPD addressed she didn’t care if he was politically correct. The “elders down at the city hall” and the “Sarahs and Hannahs” did, however.
She doesn't have to care what they think, though. She has plenty of money. She is the one choosing to put her brand first.
Did you miss the part where he is the Smallest Man Who Ever Lived because he ghosted her?
This exactly. I don’t get why people want them to be together in the end. She is very clear in TTPD that this was a manic phase, he was the miracle move on drug, she writes the worst men the best and she has moved on. It was counterfeit, it died. She was wrecked, likely mourning both relationships simultaneously. And none of it really matters as much as the way the act of creating helped heal her and the impact it has on others. I hope she is happy with Travis and feels fulfilled. If not, I hope she is able to find the love she is looking for. And even though it’s none of my business, I’d love if she found it with Harry Styles.
You don’t pay attention to lyrics, do you? The miracle move-on drug in Fortnight is Joe Alwyn, and yes, even Travis now. The one she sings “I love you, it’s ruining my life” to and has tried to get over all those years is Matty Healy. If the song didn’t make that clear to you, try watching the Fortnight video, which is a copy of Part Of The Band video and has a million Matty references. The other men - HS, JS, TK - were/are rebounds/I-am-trying-to-move-on-from-you. Probably even coverups for what was actually going on with MH behind the scenes all those years. Illicit Affairs explains it pretty well. Joe was either willfully ignorant, contractually bound to keep mum, or a total idiot, but regardless, she was hooking up with, chasing and writing about Matty all along. And I think HS was a coverup for her and she a beard for him. The manic phase prologue is her trying to mitigate her crash out and save face in front of her fans and Travis as she released unhinged songs like Down Bad, Guilty As Sin, Fresh Out The Slammer, But Daddy I Love Him, I Can Do It With A Broken Heart, iamgonnagetyouback etc. about MH on the album. But her lyrics are all I need to hear to know who her heart really wants. “Just say when, I'd play again He was my best friend… I felt more when we played pretend than with all the Kens.”
