Isn't there an MD statue that differentiation must be provided? How are they getting around that?
There is, but MSDE isn’t doing anything to enforce it
Differentiation is not the same thing as cohorting/tracking. Differentiation occurs within a heterogeneous cohort.
Tracking and cohorting are different. Tracking implies there's no way to get on a track once its set. Not true with cohorting. Why are you so against making sure gifted and high achieving kids get what they need to thirive?
I’m not against giving students what they need. I’m making sure people understand what differentiation means. It doesn’t mean groupings kids of similar ability into one class. It also doesn’t mean creating individualized lesson plans for each student in the class. My biggest pet peace as a teacher is when parents ask about differentiation without understanding what it is. And I agree that differentiation doesn’t work for high achieving kids because their differentiation ends up looking like more busy work or being ignored while the teacher goes between the lower groups.
Correct. Someone gets it. Differentiation isn’t about giving students more worksheets or more assignments. In fact this has been shown to frustrate gifted students and make them feel like they are being punished with more work.
But again the teacher you’re quoting is saying it’s not about grouping kids by ability into separate classes. How do you differentiate successfully if you don’t cohort? That’s the entire problem with option 2 MCPS is proposing. It is just extra work for gifted kids if it’s not a separate class
