How are governments grocery stores supposed to work logistically?
He wants one in each borough in food deserts. It’s going to be a huge mess if half of their produce department needs to be thrown out weekly because nobody buys. The food desert residents like those in the projects are used to cheap fast food, deli sandwiches, Sodas, and snack foods along with the lotto tickets and cigarettes from the bodegas. They aren’t going to get a cart of vegetables without a car mind you and walk to their walk up apartment in nyc
The food deserts don't exist in isolation. There's always the convenience stores, bodegas, that will sell you the "junk" food and soda. You aren't going to change consumer habits by making healthy options available. Even adding restrictions to food stamps doesn't work because it creates an underground market for fraud related to purchases.
Wow. You’re really threatened by this idea. If you’re not a New Yorker what do you care? And … what if it works!?! MAHA amirite?
I am not threatened at all. The idea has been tried before. It's not new. It never works. You can't force consumers to make healthier choices. https://sph.umich.edu/news/2025posts/restrictions-incentives-snap-food-policies.html The more you post, the more I think this grocery store will be the public school cafeteria with pizza classified as a vegetable.
100% Just go volunteer at a food bank/food pantry in this area. Those collecting their rations do not want fresh veggies. Fresh veggies are the #1 thing that goes to waste for us. We have had the "you get what you get & you don't throw a fit" rule for about a year now, and people still ask for no fresh veggies. A lot of their reasons are valid, too, tbh. Reasons such as poor/no teeth (hard to bite/chew raw veg), no way to cook, and kids refuse them and fed is best when it comes to kids. They want foods that are easy and fast to consume and filling. Foods that can be made in 1 pot and only require 1 burner because many people don't have a working stove but do have an electric burner.
Do you think more food pantries could be beneficial to people in those communities?
