Lots of funny input here. Pretty straightforward IMO:

1)  Have a good reason for joining (e.g., genuine interest in the activities)
2)  Don't be a tw@t
3)  If you have (actual) friends who are members, express to them your interest in exploring membership -- they can help you navigate

Third point is important. You shouldn't want to join club X Y or Z because you think it's prestigious or will be good for your social standing / career (if you do think this way, see point #2... you're probably a tw@t), but rather because (A) your friends and broader circle are members there (so it's a nice, familiar place) and (B) you will get a lot of use out of it for yourself and your family. 99.9% probability your friends (who are members) will be excited that you're interested because that means you get to hang out there together. Not rocket science! [/quote]
