I don't necessarily think this is true, however...
1. Have you seen the obesity (never mind overweight) rates in America?
2. Sports help with almost every aspect of the soft skills in your career: teamwork, perseverance, creative thinking, problem-solving, grit.
3. Often sports introduce you to people from all over the world.
4. Sports personally medicated my ADHD and depression effectively.
5. They are good for your mental and physical health. 
6. They create a special kind of bonding among kids that you don't get anywhere else (unless you enlist in the military later)
7. They create a focus on what your body can DO instead of what it looks like, especially crucial for girls
8. They grow self confidence and self esteem

Those things are great, but kids can get those things without sports [/quote]
