What a terrible lesson to teach her children. Keeping up with the joneses and materialism and bragging rights is more important than family.
How is any of it about bragging rights or materialism? I don’t get it.
Luxury travel at the most expensive time of the year isn’t materialism?
Not all travel is “luxury”. We know several families who travel over Christmas break instead of giving gifts (to immediate family/ kids). We’ve never done this but have always admired the idea actually.
When you travel this time of year, it costs 50-100% more than the normal price, so by definition a luxury. We are big on travel but never travel this week because it would eat up most of our budget for the year. We’d rather take 2-3 week long trips at other times.
We (my whole family) love to ski. Schools don't get a February break. When, precisely, should we go on a much anticipated ski trip other than the Christmas break?
My spouse travels a ton for work and we use points and miles to go on what people deem are “luxury” vacations for free. A lot of times if you book ahead of time doing it over the Holidays or other breaks isn’t more expensive than other times. I’m sorry but we earned it with my husband being away for weeks at a time! If he didn’t get those incentives then he would switch his job. People from the outside might assume what OP is assuming but they would be incorrect. If they live close I don’t know what the issue is. I don’t live close to my family and don’t see them every Christmas and can’t, as in laws also live far away. Some years we do in laws some years my family some years our own family. Be happy you got all those years and let it go!
