I grew up in the rural South. Every white guy I grew up with got as good a job as he tried to get, and most did not go to college. Historically, poor Southern whites who wanted out of their home town joined the military or moved to industrial cities for auto, steel, or other skilled trades jobs while the Black migrants got only the hard labor jobs. If the Southern boys stayed in the rural South, they were Barney Fifed - hired as cronies or relatives of the sheriff or mayor or county supervisor, or they got hired, no questions asked, wherever their father or uncle or brother-in-law worked. DP....  90% is a made-up statistic if you're talking about Iraq, Afghanistan or any other campaign of the last 60 years.  For example, in the opening years of the Vietnam War, more than 20% of the combat dead were blacks.

Overall, our military is 67% white, 20% black (which is a lot considering blacks only make up 12% of the US population), 6% asian, remainder latino, native american, hawaiian etc.   Source:  https://demographics.militaryonesource.mil/  And blacks are definitely pulling their weight in our armed services and likewise, the combat dead statistics track with the demographics.
