In the same way that George VI is largely remembered as the link between the abdication and Elizabeth. His reign was short but significant in that it secured the line of succession and smoothed over what could have been a cataclysmic event for the royal family. Elizabeth's death is of course different in nature from the abdication -- it is the "natural" order of things. But because of the length of her reign and the growing displeasure with the royals from the British people (especially in light of all the bad press recently due to Andrew), there is this massive sense of loss and fear the the monarchy could become unmoored. If Charles successfully puts those fears to rest and hands a healthy monarchy over to William in 10-20 years, he will be viewed favorable in much the way George is, for having done his duty to the family and institution. Even if he is never beloved the way his mom was -- few monarchs are.[/quote]
