Why would you assume this production should be completely secular? It's not the role of the Kennedy Center to censor or provide warnings about religious content, or any content with which you may not agree.
How many times do you “research” a production company before booking something at the Kennedy Center. Most reasonable adults assume that TKC doesn’t promote cults.
Because the consensus is that it is not a cult. That's your opinion and not widely held.
So you do or you don’t research performances beyond the Kennedy Center descriptions? I’ve gone to many, many shows there over decades and have never googled the production companies. Why can’t TKC provide an accurate description on their website and promotional materials?
That’s your own failure to plan.
So you do or you don’t research performances beyond the Kennedy Center descriptions?
I do. Don’t you read reviews from multiple sources? Casts change all the time in productions and some are better than others.
No, I don’t read reviews of shows that are scheduled out months in advance because the casts aren’t set and individual performers wouldn’t affect my decision to see a performance. The KC description/video has been fully sufficient. Why can’t TKC provide an accurate description on their website and promotional materials?
Well that’s your problem. As a “researcher” you should have read the reviews. Why are you still here beating a dead horse? You’re not getting the answers here. Nor in the thread you created in Religion.
You are confusing posters. I’m not a researcher. I’m just a regular KC subscriber who expects the descriptions to accurately represent the performances.
The description is accurate. You just disagree with it.
The description is not accurate. Where does this mention anything about fundamentalist propaganda? “ SHEN YUN’S unique artistic vision expands theatrical experience into a multi-dimensional, inspiring journey through one of humanity’s greatest treasures—the five millennia of traditional Chinese culture. This epic production immerses you in stories reaching back to the most distant past. You’ll explore realms even beyond our visible world. Featuring one of the world’s oldest art forms— classical Chinese dance—along with patented scenographic effects and all-original orchestral works, Shen Yun opens a portal to a civilization of enchanting beauty and enlightening wisdom. Traditional Chinese culture—with its profoundly optimistic worldview and deep spiritual roots— was displaced by communism in China. Today, only the New York–based Shen Yun is keeping this precious heritage alive on stage. And it’s an experience that will take your breath away.” It’s very telling that they NO NOT include an accurate description. Because they know most people wouldn’t go see it. They can only get an audience by misleading advertising.
Round and round you go. You’re still wrong and bitter you didn’t read reviews.
So you don’t think TKC should be transparent about this production?
Nope. I think you need to take responsibility for your mistake and move on.
I haven’t made any mistakes. I am just disappointed that TKC isn’t forthcoming in their description. It definitely diminishes my opinion of TKC. I would like them to update their website/materials to more accurately portray this show. Then whoever wants to see fundamentalist propaganda can go see it. But I guess they can’t be transparent and still get paying customers. Guess it isn’t the first time that religious people have used shady tactics to push propaganda.
You did. You’ve already admitted it. “It was a mistake to just skim the results without reading something more in-depth about the show (like the New Yorker piece). I never thought that Kennedy Center would put such a crap on one of its stages.” You’ve done nothing but complain in the two threads you’ve created. If you want the Kennedy Center to update their website, then contact them directly. Whining over and over here is not going to get the Kennedy Center to update their website.
You are confusing posters. That wasn’t me. I haven’t started any threads and I haven’t made any mistakes. Why are you trying to silence people? You don’t think that people should be aware of these shady tactics by religious fundamentalists? It’s very reasonable to expect that TKC would provide accurate descriptions of its performances. And it’s also reasonable to expect a certain level of quality for any performances held there.
Nah. You’re the OP of this thread. It’s quite clear.
I’ve posted on this thread earlier but I’m not OP. Feel free to ask Jeff. I’m a KC subscriber who is put off by these shady tactics. It really diminishes my opinion of TKC.
So what have you said to the Kennedy Center?
Same thing I say here. That I’m disappointed that they host this show and more importantly that they aren’t being transparent about the content.
Remind me again what all the posts here are doing to change the KC marketing?
Why do you think this thread would change the marketing? OP posted this as a PSA to potential viewers. Surprisingly, some posters are vigorously defending these sketchy tactics. Guess they are into propaganda?
So it’s been posted. And OP is repeatedly posting complaining. How does posting here change their issue with the KC? Read the comments. Over and over they are complaining that the KC isn’t clear in their marketing. So again - how does constantly complaining here change the KC marketing approach?
Seems like you’re the only one here expecting this thread to change the marketing. It doesn’t look like OP has posted recently. Some twit made a snarky Pelosi comment so it got bumped again. Any thoughts on why some posters are vigorously defending this or trying to shut down discussion? Very odd.
I think what’s really odd is the poster unable to accept that they didn’t bother to research or read reviews about the event they were going to see. And posting over and over trying to blame the Kennedy Center. That’s very odd.
They advertise aggressively both online and by mail. The short movies I saw online were well-made, the colors were vibrant, and the dancers were skilled. I didn't find any reviews on TKC website and Shen Yun website has only have promotional materials (no real reviews). I am able to accept that my research was not adequate. There might be other people who do not have the time to research the show. Maybe some of them stumble on this thread and learn about the cult they end up supporting without even knowing.
