I can't wrap my mind around this. If we commit to the Creed that "all those who believe in God shall not perish but have eternal life," what happens to those who are not Baptized? I guess that is the whole basis for proselytizing, to make sure everyone can go to heaven, right? But if I have problem believing that God is so vengeful and would really fault babies for their parents' decisions, then it seems hypocritical to baptize my child. I don't want to commit to something in a ceremony that I don't fully endorse. Where does that leave me? Anyone else struggle with this?
Our church (LDS) believes: that Christ set the example for baptism (it is necessary); that all children who die before the age of accountability for their sins (8) and adults who do not reach accountability because of disabilities go automatically to paradise (the celestial kingdom mentioned in the New Testament.) For adults who never knew about Christ and baptism, or who were not baptized before they died, we provide proxy baptism in their name, and believe that they can accept or reject the ordinance in the afterlife. We agree that our loving God would not leave the majority of people who have lived on Earth without a solution for baptism and progression.
Thank you for answering the op question.
