I can’t muster outrage— anyone else? I mean Congress could pass a law dealing with this. They had 50 years. This is on Congress. Also, abortion has been basically illegal in Texas since September. Where are the stories of coat hangers and women dying and rape victims giving birth? I haven’t read any. Maybe this won’t be so bad. Maybe (gasp) most people are actually fine with this or they’ll figure out how to go to California or New York if they need to. The lack of Texas horror stories is telling. Maybe this isn’t the emergency liberals scream about. Makes you think.
Can I make you think about specifically which times in the last fifty years that the House had a liberal Democratic majority with enough votes to pass something like this, while simultaneously also having a 60-vote filibuster-proof majority to pass it on the Senate side, with a conference committee in agreement? Fill me in.
Between April 2009 and January 2010, the Democrats had a filibuster proof 60 vote margin in the Senate. It was when they passed the Affordable Care Act without a single Republican vote. That’s not counting pro-choice Republicans (and there are some). They could have passed an abortion bill, if they had wanted to do so. The reality is that there are always red and purple state Democrats who do not want to vote on abortion as an issue.
Maybe they falsely assumed that RvW was safe. Who would have thought this might happen in our lifetimes? The US is imploding. I guess the Rs did want to burn it all down.
