The problem is that for that amount of tuition people want a track record and proven results.
Do you think it's unreasonable for families to want a track record of proven results for that amount of tuition?
Not at all. Where did I say that? I understand the reservations and I also understand the person that says, "what do we have to lose." I don't have to jump on the bash Whittle bandwagon to make people feel good. I 100% get why people are skeptical. Chris Whittle has a spotty past. I personally think that the model is awesome and I hope it works.
I guess I am not sure what is so transformative or different about what they are offering. A second language? WIS and 15 or so DCPS schools and charters offer that already. Private schools actually have trouble finding teachers who can teach in a second language, as they pay so much less than the public schools. I'm not sure Benno Schmidt is correct that "colleges value a second language". A huge percentage of people in this area are bilingual. For Americans, a second language isn't such a huge advantage on the job market, as there will always be a native speaker around. Teacher as coach? The flipped model, where kids watch lectures at home and get coaching in problem solving, is being used by a huge number of colleges, and local publics. Eleanor Roosevelt, the PG County STEM Magnet, has been using that method for years. A maker lab? Try Montgomery Blair magnet (or any school circa 1955. It was called shop class). Fancy architecture? Research does suggest that students perform better when school buildings are not run-down, but the effects aren't huge.
