I’ve actually thought W&K won’t take on as much right now because there will be a trickle down of many, many appointments and visits over the next few years. If they take on too much, they’ll have to make room for the queen’s and charles’ projects, and drop dozens of others. It doesn’t look great to drop one once you’ve taken it on. And ^ this was all aligned with their desire to be involved with their young children; so I’m sure they’ll take on more after QE2 passes on.
Uh-huh. There's something called preparing for the role. If they can't do their minor jobs now, when they get to the big leagues floundering and flailing is bound to happen.
The biggest part of the role is to be wise, to not use power. And to attempt to stay reasonably popular, popular enough that the citizenry doesn't come and chop off their heads. The "work" that they do, that's all separate from the important part of the job.
The work that they do ensures their popularity and continuity for the next generation. You think the rest of Europe's monarchs weren't deposed because people liked seeing them laze about and go to parties decked in jewels? You really should take a look at the most recent abdication of King Juan Carlos I of Spain....four years ago. He was given no choice. Also P.S. - careful use of power has nothing to do with it. The British monarchy is a constitutional one and has been since 1701. They have no power except the power not to f*ck up.
