Why wasn’t it racist?
My dictionary defines racism as, "prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior." The Root reporter and Carson are the same race so it does not meet this definition. However, as I said, I don't have an answer to whether it is racist or not. I don't think that's a decision for a white guy. I'd like to hear what people of color think about whether one black person can be racist against another black person.
Of course people of color can be racist against people of their same race. Was the porch monkey comment racist? I would call it highly offensive and as a woman of color I would not have done it. However, people who have a shared race, ethnicity, culture, background often speak to and about one another in a way that speaks to those shared contexts. Something people outside of those groups should not feel entitled to do, especially if those ways of speaking were at one time used as a way of degrading, denigrating and demeaning those within the group. It's like when two people are married, maybe Jeff's wife calls him "Sweetie Poo", I do not feel entitled to do what Maria does. NOW, Jeff may hate being called "Sweetie Poo" and he and Maria may debate, discuss, scream, holla, and tear s*** up about whether that term of endearment is acceptable. THAT'S BETWEEN JEFF AND MARIA.
P.S. If you want this Monique chick fired. I suggest your time might be better spent on change.org, complaining to the Root and whatever other websites, publications, milk carton companies may be hiring this FREELANCE journalist, but complaining on DCUM is pointless. Especially, since most of us never read that article or heard of her AND I READ THE ROOT.
