At Harvard, there were 39,041 applicants for the Class of 2020. Only 2,106 were admitted. Of those, just 289 were African-American. If Harvard just didn't accept any Black students, regardless of qualifications, that would mean the non-Black admission rate would go up by 0.7%. Don't blame affirmative action for your child's rejection. There 99 other reasons he didn't get in and affirmative action isn't one of them.
+1 Why are people so worried about "losing" their spot to an African American kid? My black daughter is not keeping your kid out of Harvard. The laws of supply and demand are, combined with a desire to not have a school of people who do the same. It's a lottery for 90% of the applicants to these schools. EVERYBODY has a 4.0+, EVERYBODY has perfect SAT/ACT scores, and EVERYBODY has shown "leadership" and "service." It is not the admissions process that we went through in the 1980's. I was recruited by Harvard and had a scholarship to Stanford. However, as a first generation black girl from a small midwestern town, I chose my state university because I didn't KNOW that I was supposed to choose Stanford. Today, I wouldn't have a chance at Harvard or Stanford. My child, who has been raised upper middle class by a mostly singe mom, will be lucky to get into the top 100-150 ranked schools that she's interested in. It's a different game and it's not because 10 black kids from the DMV got into Harvard.
That isn't true.
