In Israel there is military mandatory service. Women serve 2 years and men serve 2 years, 8 months. Additionally, women are required to service in the army reserve until age 24 and men until age 41 for enlisted /up to age 45 to 50 for officers/specialist.

The biggest issue is the the ultra-orthodox (The Haredim,  God-fearing, in Hebrew) who refuse to serve in the military with rare exceptions. It is ironic that Iran is run by religious fundamentalist and soon Israel will be run by religious fundamentalists. Both the Iranian and Israeli ultra religious have far more children than others so their population continues to grow.

According to an article in the NYT last year The Haredim, who average more than six children per family, now make up 14 percent of the nation, up from 5 percent in 1948. In 40 years, they are on track to account for half of all Israeli children. While other Israelis work and service the military, Haredim receive government subsidies to study the Torah and were exempt from getting drafted up until 18 months ago. As of last year, the Israeli military has since sent draft orders to 10,000 Haredi men. Just 338 have shown up for duty.[/quote]
