The app is way more accurate than gotsoccer. Gotsoccer rankings are an antiquated system. Can't believe you diehard "soccer" parents don't know of the app. Like where have you been? Gotsoccer is garbage. Whenever someone mentions rankings from gotsoccer, I laugh and it shows you obviously know nothing about rankings.
I know the app, it immediately lost any credibility when i found out how it ranks teams. I don't bother with any youth soccer rankings, outside the top 25 or so teams you are truly wasting your time. To think there is any merit to these arbitrary crowdsourced rankings in the hundreds is comical.
It ranks teams purely based on the outcomes of their games. That's it.
Ha, sorry my friend. I hate to break it to you here… that’s not the case. Think about it this way, in college football the top 25 has multiple polls. Coaches, AP, BCS and they rarely ever have consensus. That’s the top 25 in a sport with massive $ on the line. If you expanded those polls out to a hundred it would have massive differences depending on the methodology of rankings, weight given to different conferences etc. To attempt to do that in youth soccer where team ranks and results are carried over year to year instead of reset is inaccurate to say the least. On top of that the algorithm used to rank teams on the app is not transparent by design and the rankings can be altered by users. I’m not saying don’t use it but understand its an app created to make a profit and not contributed to by any youth soccer governing body for any meaningful ranking.
It's based on a rolling 12 months of games. Longer history is there to view. Results drive the numbers. Beating bad teams by many goals doesn't artificially move you up the rankings. Beating other good teams does. Nobody is saying it's perfect, but it's the best out there, and if nothing else give you a good gage on the relative strength of the team you're playing against and how you stack up. Game to game, anything can happen to players on teams (injuries, drama, vacations) and the variance is huge. But over time, relative strengths based on results shows through in the app.
It’s set up much like the SP+ rankings for football - ratings are computer driven, users cannot edit them. The only way that a user can manipulate the rankings is by submitting fraudulent data for game results. I have traced VA for a couple years for ECNL, GA, and ECRL. It all looks accurate. It even updates based on data streams. For example, the ECRL in NOVA had at least 2 teams that lost numerous 13-0 games to other ECRL division opponents. Those games were changed to 7-0 by the league and were updated on the app. Perhaps that’s what’s considered manipulation?
I get why leagues don't want to list 13-0 blowouts. But when you switch the score to 7-0 the winner gets screwed in the rankings and the loser maintains a higher ranking then they deserve.
