Dana Dentino is refusing to let her third-grade son take New Jersey's newest standardized test this year, the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers, or PARCC test.

The 44-year-old Ocean Township (Monmouth County) mother is joining thousands of parents statewide who are refusing the lengthy tests, which will be held over multiple days and test the math and language arts abilities of students in third through 11th grades this year.

The bill would require schools to provide students who do not take the test with "educationally appropriate alternative activities" during the assessment time. It would also require schools to notify parents of detailed standardized testing schedules, say whether the test scores will be used to determine academic placement, and establish procedures that enable parents to refuse the assessments for their children.

[b]Ocean Township students will be tested in March over five days with testing periods lasting between 90-minutes and two hours each day, district Superintendent James Stefankiewicz said. Students will undergo another week of PARCC testing at the end of the school year.[/b][/quote]
