This is the weirdest thread I've ever read. My child does not need a freakin' meal at a party, unless it's held at lunch or dinner time. Cake and juice is more than enough. Surprisingly, I can go several hours without feeding my face. Seriously, how fat are you people? Are you the same moms that carry snacks and drinks everywhere you go? An afternoon party certainly does not require that the hosts provide a meal.
Huh? I don't think many posters have argued that you need a full meal at 2:30 in the afternoon. But if your party ends at 12:30 or 6, you should provide something. And not just for the kids, unless it's strictly drop off. I think people are annoyed because they're being invited to parties that end at 1:00 and no food or drinks are offered to the adults. A cupcake party at 2:30 is totally fine. A cake-only party that ends at 12:30, or where each kid gets a slice of pizza and parents get nothing, is rude. How about this - if you do not plan to serve food, make sure that your party does not interrupt other people's mealtimes. This madness doesn't stop with kids' birthday parties...i was invited to a party from 7:00 to 9:00 recently. No dinner, and clearly not enough food out that everyone was expected to make dinner out of that; tiny appetizer plates. After being told to make sure we were hungry! Ti. It was ridiculous. These people were massively wealthy and had hired staff on hand for this small (25 people) party so I don't know what they were thinking. Party was out in the 'burbs, too, and not many places were open for dinner after that. So you get home at 10:00, hungry.
