Jeff is an Orientalist; he cannot be objective about this topic. Atrocities are committed on both sides; both sides use people as pawns and shields in this conflict. Why is nobody mentioning how many rockets Hezbollah fired over Yom Kippur? Why are we holding Israel to a higher expectation and are outraged when they do not act with some high moral ground, but it is ok for Hamas and Hezbollah to be savage? On that note, why is it barely news that rockets were fired at Israel, but we are all judging Israelis with a different lens? I wrote a long post about how people are used and abused by those in power on both sides. Why are so many outraged only on behalf of Israel's actions?
I am not an Orientalist and I consider that label to be an insult. I assume that you consider yourself to be perfectly objective? Hezbollah's rockets hit a military base and killed and wounded members of the Golani Brigade. Israel, however, bombed a Christian village in northern Lebanon: [twitter]https://x.com/dropsitenews/status/1845873107514384681[/twitter] The day that we provide equal funds and weapons to Hamas, Hezbollah, and Israel will be the day that I hold them all to the same standard. But I don't think that objecting to my tax dollars being used to support genocide is out of line.
I do not consider it an insult. Why would you consider a branch of social studies an insult? Orientalism is a valid social science and a study of how those with power in the West and micro and macro societies label those they wish to Other in some way, usually for exploitation. Specifically, Orientalism, in its conception, refers to Muslims vs. Western Societies. Are you denying that you have a degree that strongly focuses on Orientalism? Funny, I recall reading your post about your academic background, in which you stated that you studied Orientalism. Was it one course, and you think you are an expert? My fault then. You are not objective at all about the conflict in the Middle East; like our Palestinian pp, you just bear teeth at anyone who questions your opinion on the matter. Now you are talking about your tax dollars, flip-flopping. You are way more than objecting to how your tax dollars are spent. Did you feel the same when the U.S. and NATO bombed a maternity hospital in Belgrade in order to "prevent" ethnic cleansing?
The only thing that I have ever done that involved Orientalism is read Edward Said's book by that name. I suggest that you read it too so that you will stop insulting me with the label. I have no interest in "othering" Muslims, Arabs or anyone else. I studied the Middle East in order to learn about and understand the region. Also, what are you, 100 years old? Nobody calls Middle East Studies "Orientalism" anymore and haven't for decades. Yes, I am biased. That doesn't mean that I am wrong. You are also biased. You refuse to admit it, but that doesn't make you right. Of course I opposed the U.S. aggression in the Balkans. There was plenty of ethnic cleansing to go around in that conflict. But, the U.S. and NATO directly supported it in Kosovo. I was strongly opposed to that. But, you know what the U.S. did not do? Bomb every single hospital in Serbia. Israel has attacked every hospital in Gaza and has now started on hospitals in Lebanon. You can't even bring yourself to criticize it.
