I'm shocked that DH brother and wife allow her to wear a swimsuit like that, but I kept my mouth shut. My daughters are a bit younger, but is this the kind of swimsuit that most high school girls wear now?
You should continue to keep your mouth shut. My SIL said something similar to me. Something about how she can't believe I let my daughters wear those short shorts. I looked at her and said because they like them, they fit into them, they're good kids, and the last thing I'm going to do is shame a girl for what they're wearing.
Okay but you didn’t remotely engage with what your SIL said. And you can’t “shame” a girl (WTF with the overuse of the word “shame” these days, BTW) for the clothes she’s wearing if you just don’t let her wear those clothes in the first place! I realize this is going to blow your mind, but you are the mother which means you are the decider! Stop abdicating your responsibilities onto your underage daughter, maybe?
Well this might blow your mind, but I actually did let them buy the clothes. I DECIDED they can wear them and that I'm not going to make a big deal over a pair of short shorts that 75% of teen girls wear these days. What makes you think that YOU get to decide what's appropriate for all teen girls, Judgy?
Yes, I judge you and your (lack of) parenting. Way to sexualize your teen daughters, Mom! Girl power, amirite?
NP. You do realize, PP, you are being super judgy right now, right? And that’s a bad thing. Also, you are not funny, “amirite”.
Frankly our society needs more judgement and shaming, not less.
Judging and shaming teen girls is not one of them. Go find something else to criticize.
We’re judging and shaming their idiot mothers, not the girls.
Honestly some of you women need to get a grip. Have you been to a beach in Europe? You all would have a blast calling the women there a tramp with low self- esteem. I was at Portugal last year and literally every female of all ages were topless. Some men were completely naked but I bet that's acceptable, amirite?
Oh my gosh, you poor thing! Are you under the impression that the United States of America is in Europe?
Goodness, great job for completely missing the point. You obviously don't have the capability to participate in this discussion.
Bringing up how people do things in Europe is as irrelevant to the conversation about Americans as if you had brought up how things are done in Saudi Arabia. “Honestly some of you women need to get a grip. Have you been to a beach in Saudi Arabia? You all would have a blast calling the women there prudes with no sense of fashion or fun.” That’s how stupid you sound.
Really? So you're seriously suggesting that it's okay if teen girls in the U.S. who wear short shorts are viewed as being promiscuous and having low self-esteem, but girls in Europe or other parts of the world who show more skin shouldn't be viewed that way? You really think this in this day and age? And you bringing up how things are done in Saudi Arabia is about as moronic as it can get. My whole point was that no one should be judged on what they wear to begin with.
When one is going with the cultural norm, it is because it is the cultural norm. (So it is a safe assumption that the women and girls in Portugal swim topless because that’s what everyone does and has always done.) When one is going against the cultural norm, it is usually for a specific reason. (So when girls wear a thong to the community swimming pool at which the vast majority of women and girls wear bottoms that cover their butts, it is safe to assume the girls are doing it for attention.) i.e. European fashion standards (swimwear or otherwise) are not relevant to US fashion standards
Vast number of teen girls in the U.S. wear short shorts, crop tops, and a good amount wear bikini bottoms that are not full coverage. Yes, those are now the cultural norms in women's wear the past 20 years or more. It's time for people to lighten up. The more we are flabbergasted and judgy about it, the more it becomes sexualized. Oh, and I don't know where you live, but I have yet to see a teenage girl wear a full-on thong at a community pool.
