Look at those absentee numbers and tell me that anyone leaving Drew for Montessori must be a racist! There are so many factors going on there. I think race probably does play a role, but I think poverty and attendance and school performance matter more to most parents. Sad to see the Wakefield number.
The Wakefield number is heartbreaking.
It makes sense considering Drew, Randolph and Abingdon send students there.
Not really because Gunston should also be a lot worse. It’s a lot lower than Kenmore and a little lower than TJMS.
The elementary schools split between gunston and TJ- I know Abingdon and Randolph do, not sure about Drew
The kids split but then why Kenmore so much worse than Gunston. Carlin springs is mostly Kenmore but their rate looks good in comparison to Abingdon and Drew. Maybe Gunston and Carlin springs are doing something different.
I have a theory that it’s related to transportation/location. Almost all kids at Carlin Springs are bus riders because Carlin Springs RD isn’t considered safe for ES kids to cross. So parents get their kids to the much closer bus stops, and bam, they go to school. But when it’s up to a parent to walk them there, or if they have to leave for work before their older ES-MS-HS kids leaves and is supposed to walk themselves, maybe it doesn’t happen. This isn’t NA. Parents here do NOT want to walk their kids. That was the feedback when Campbell lost some of its buses. Campbell used to have many more buses and a much smaller walk zone for historical reasons when Campbell housed a lot of Pre-K 3 classes. Now they have a pretty high absentee rate. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not. The ART bus stop at Kenmore is always packed right after school. The MS kids who are “walkers” also DO NOT walk. So maybe location/transportation has something to do with it?
Interesting. Certainly something APS should investigate.
