I thought Penelope was made distractingly fat and ugly this season. She looks much better in Derry Girls. It would have been nice if dress colors had occasionally changed. All that money and the dressmaker organizes each household by fabric color! I thought the turmeric scene was weird because these Indian girls act completely British ton society at all other times except for the nicknames and bangles. Then all of a sudden they need to incorporate something ethnic? The other non-White characters don’t do anything different, I just thought it was a weird switch. Are we having multiracial characters or not?
Agree. The small random attempts to slide in “Indian cultural norms” was utterly bizarre, distracting and completely unwarranted. These books are about the English regency not Indian culture.
Yes. Why did the show move in this direction?
I imagine because the books were all written about white people. And they felt like they had to explain why some indian people were suddenly part of the Ton. Kind of like how they wrote the backstory in season 1 for the Duke's father and the Queen. It's all obviously not based in fact or reality, but I just think they did a better job of explaining the changes last season than this one. also - indian person here - what bothered me was the accents. Kate has an indian accent. That makes sense because she grew up in India. Her mom doesn't have an indian accent and that makes sense because she grew up in England. But Edwina literally switches between an indian accent and a british accent the whole time which really annoys me - just make up your mind. Personally to stay consistent, i think she should have an indian accent since she grew up in india too.
