How big was that tip Belinda received?
That's another thing, I was hoping we'd see Belinda off somewhere doing something great, living her best life. But instead you see her (along with the pregnant woman from the first episode, btw) waving from the shore greeting the new set of guests. There were all these small and intersting nuances that went nowhere.
But isn’t that the point of the show? The cycle of exploitation continues. The rich people just continue on their merry ways. Shane leaves the resort with a handshake after stabbing the manager. Paula leaves Kai to face whatever his fate is. Jennifer Coolidge leaves Belinda after getting her hopes up. Etc etc.
This. Are our main characters changed? Sure, a little.
I actually thought Shane was changed. He looked genuinely stricken after he inadvertently killed Armond then hopeful and genuinely loving when he saw Rachel again. Maybe it won't last but there was something there. The daughter was genuinely sweet and protective to her friend after her major assholery to the people who had been nothing but generous to her. And the Mossbachers, who didn't seem like bad people, got out of their own @sses and managed to connect with one another (minus Quinn, who found more meaning in the beauty of nature). Belinda was disappointed but received a massive tip for a few days' annoyance and then stood up for herself. And the psychically tormented Jennifer Coolidge seemed to find a bit of peace and happiness, and some wisdom about her bad emotional habits. I thought there was a quiet beauty to it. With the exception of Paula's and Armond's dark arcs.
I agree that Shane seemed like he had taken a turn for the better (even though he was so rude to the couple at the airport).
I agree and think his demeanor between the first and last ep scenes was different and meant to throw us off a bit. Mike White does suggest a possible turn for the better in a recent interview: "Switching gears, did Shane and Rachel’s reunion at the end make you happy or sad? I felt sort of happy that they [ended up] together. The emotion of the music and [the look on] their faces, I was like, “Awww, that’s nice.” As far as what it means in terms of her idealism and what she’s choosing, it’s bittersweet. I don’t judge her for it. It was always about her choosing that lifestyle and whatever compromises she was going to have to make in connection with that. And so it made sense for the character. The way he tightly embraced her, it seemed to me like maybe the death of Armond had changed him and he was appreciating her more. Am I reading too much into that? I think that’s right. It’s paralleled with the Nicole and Mark storyline, where some kind of traumatic thing can change the DNA of a situation and make someone a little more sympathetic. I kind of wanted Shane to look like a little boy lost. Suddenly, all of his swagger is gone. And I find that that’s often true with those kind of guys. They’re so used to winning that when something bad happens they don’t really know how to process it. They’re often a little lost."
